Having bad credit is no reason to postpone your education when a simple solution is available. Just because you have bad credit doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. In fact you can get just about any kind of loan that people with better credit can get. You just have to pay more interest usually. There are several ways that you can go about getting a bad credit student loan:
Private Student Loans For People With Bad Credit
If you can’t qualify for federal student loans or have maxed out your federal student loans, a private student loan for people with bad credit is a good choice. People make use of private student loans all the time to cover the price of college. Just know that they work a little differently than federal student loans do. They can also be a bit harder to come by.
Unless you have a very high income, getting a private student loan with bad credit will be difficult. Usually your best bet is to try and find a cosigner. This can be a friend or relative it doesn’t matter as long as they have a decent credit history. Many times you can even remove this cosigner within a few months if you’ve made your payments on time.
You can also try applying for a combination loan which can consolidate all your existing loans into one large one. This can be useful if you already have several student loans and just need another one.
Federal Student Loans For People With Bad Credit
Obviously one of the easier ways to get a student loan is through the government. Federal student loans for most part will work fine for those with bad credit. The Stafford loan is one of the most common but if you get maxed out on those, you can also try a Perkins loan. An Astrive or CitiAssist student loan can also be helpful.
A factor that can help with getting a federal bad credit student loan is good grades. This can sometimes help to outweigh your bad credit history when you can prove that you are a good student that has the intention of repaying their loan.
Whichever way you decide to go, you need to understand that getting a student loan with bad credit is more difficult but not possible. It is important just to go out there and find your different options that you have available to you. Many times federal student loans will be enough to get you through your college years but private student loans are just as much of an option to you.
